TEDx Viewing Session: Speed Up Innovation with Design Thinking

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organised a TEDx viewing session on 27th February 2026, featuring the talk “Speed up Innovation with Design Thinking” by Guido Stompff. The session aimed to inspire students to explore innovation, user-centric design, and creative problem-solving in engineering practice.

The talk emphasised that innovation is not the result of a single breakthrough but a continuous process of observation, experimentation, and refinement. Mr. Stompff highlighted that design thinking begins with understanding user needs rather than relying solely on technical assumptions. By studying user behaviour, engineers can identify practical and meaningful solutions. A key point discussed was the importance of rapid prototyping to test concepts quickly and learn from real-world feedback.

Collaboration across disciplines was presented as essential for generating diverse perspectives and robust solutions. The session also connected design thinking principles directly to mechanical engineering, demonstrating how user-centred design, ergonomics, and usability influence successful mechanical systems. Students appreciated the role of simulations, testing, and modern prototyping tools such as 3D printing.

Overall, the session provided valuable insights into the innovation process and encouraged students to integrate design thinking into their engineering approach, fostering creativity, efficiency, and practical problem-solving.
