SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP

Guest Talk on Electric Vehicle Technology and Future Mobility: A Professional Perspective for Mechanical Engineers

The Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organised a Guest Talk on “Electric Vehicle Technology and Future Mobility: A Professional Perspective for Mechanical Engineers” on 16 April 2026 in the Video Conference Room. The session was arranged by the Department for students of the 4th and 6th semesters.

The talk was delivered by Dr Deepa Kaliaperumal, Executive Secretary of IEEE IAS and Lead of the E-Mobility Thrust Area Group at AVV Bangalore, who provided valuable insights into the rapidly evolving field of electric mobility. Her address offered students a clear understanding of the relevance of this domain to Mechanical Engineering.

The speaker discussed the fundamentals of electric vehicles (EVs), explaining how they differ from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles by utilising electric motors powered by battery systems. Key components such as battery packs, electric motors, controllers, and charging systems were highlighted. She also elaborated on different types of EVs, including battery electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids.

The session emphasised the important role of mechanical engineers in areas such as vehicle design, thermal management, lightweight materials, and manufacturing processes. In addition, the speaker highlighted future mobility trends, including electrification, autonomous driving, and smart connected transport systems.

The talk also addressed emerging opportunities in the EV sector, such as increasing employment prospects and scope for innovation, while acknowledging challenges including high initial costs, limited charging infrastructure, and range anxiety. Overall, the session was both informative and inspiring, encouraging students to develop multidisciplinary skills and contribute to sustainable transport solutions.
